Tasks of the Intern

So, it's been about 2 weeks at Nautica. It seems like just yesterday I was taking the train into NYC for my first day. Anyways, that's probably enough reminiscing. In the past week, I've been getting more involved with everything that's going on in the office. Every Monday from here on, I get to run the Track RW reports. These are basically a run down of every division & product & how it's selling, what it's selling at, & how many weeks left of inventory we have left. The reports are pretty long. By the time I get all of them printed it's about 70 pages, give or take. Everyone on the women's team, (& I'm sure several other teams), use these reports to see how sales are going & I will also use these reports to do the Mark Down Recap report every week. I'll be putting numbers into excel sheets to calculate inventory & the price points at which everything is selling. All in all, I'm leaning WAY more than I have ever learned in the classroom at school. I'm not sure if I haven't taken the right classes yet, but being an intern in the women's buying office has opened my eyes to so many different things.

Another exciting thing that I got to do at Nautica, was be a part of the assortment building. Usually, the associate & assistant buyers sort out all the CADs for the season that is being worked on. They put them into certain delivery date schedules & then the senior buyer watches the other 2 buyers explain the flow & selections made for that particular season. Lucky little me was assigned to sweaters. I went over the numbers from the previous year & analyzed which styles would work best in the upcoming line. I really enjoyed looking over everything & seeing what products sold best.

I've been keeping pretty busy for the most part. When I have down time, I enter names & email addresses into an excel sheet so that a database can be formed to send future promotions to the customers in the database. And when I'm not doing data entry, I'm busy keeping track of the fall 2010 product samples that will be used for the upcoming photo shoot to promote the fall line.

This week, I will be working with several other areas in the Nautica offices, like planning & ecommerce. My mentor, MB, is doing a really great job at giving me a well rounded experience during my time in NYC. I know I'm also going to be learning how to use In Design this week so I can work on the holiday style guide. Pretty cool huh?! I think so anyways.

In other news besides tying to be a super star intern, I think NYC is starting to grow on me. I'm not sure if it's all the rush & busy people every where or just that it's not as hard to fit in as I had imagined. But whatever it is, even when I'm ready to go home, I know another part of me will miss being out here on the east coast & in NYC every day for work. I still have a long "to-do"list before I leave though! Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, etc....oh, did I mention Kleinfeld bridal store is literally right down the street from me? Yeah, & for someone like me who loves "Say Yes to the Dress", I think I'll be making a little walk to take some pictures because let's face it...this blog gets boring without pictures!!!!
